for those of us whose homes are too small or too old to have washrooms within them, a good laundromat can often come in handy. our current place is actually our first home that hasn’t had a washer and dryer within, or at least a place to hookup your own washer and dryer. i think it goes without saying but this new routine has taken us a bit of getting used to. if you are new to laundromats like us, here are a few tips i have learned that have helped make the adjustment slightly easier.

+ have quarters or small bills on hand. there is nothing worse than unloading all your laundry at the laundromat only to realize you’ve forgotten change for the machines.

+ bring your own detergent and dryer sheets. we’ve found not buying the small packets they offer onsite can help save money in the long run. plus, i love keeping our clothes smelling like the scent we’ve grown used to.

+ bring something to do. bring a magazine, a deck of cards or game to play (we like skip-bo), a laptop to work on, anything to stay busy and pass the time.

+ fold your laundry there instead of at home. after our laundry is finished, i like to fold it as i’m putting it back into our basket straight from the dryer. this way, when i get home, clothing can go right from the basket to being put away without trying to find space to fold it in our tiny room.

what are your laundromat tricks?

having a few floating shelves is a great way to store kitchen items without taking up a lot of room like having extra large cupboards would do in a tiny kitchen. when you only have a few small cupboards like we do, sometimes having some dishes on floating shelves is a must. i put our shelves on our chalkboard wall so the color of the dishes would pop off the black wall. i love the idea that something with purpose can also give a sense of decor at the same time. to do this i put our favorite dishes with a few decorative items on the white shelves so they are pleasant to look at while still having storage purposes as well. i bought our floating shelves from ikea for about $30. the dishes are from anthropologie and the wooden block set of london is from muji.

after camden and i made the decision to move to our current place, one big concern started to arise which was, “where is all of our stuff going to go?!?”. this new found dilemma was seriously causing us major stress. i, in particular, could not see how we could possibly make our lives fit into this teeny, tiny, 1920’s, pre-war apartment. we finally decided about fifty percent of our things had to go. we got rid of two dressers, a bed frame, a couch, our dining tables and chairs, our bookshelves, about half of our clothing, plus more; all because they were too big to fit into the confined space of our new home. even after all this purging, we were still worried how exactly it was all going to fit. our new place only had one small closet in the bedroom (about one tenth the size of our previous closet) for clothing and one other pantry in the main room. after much brainstorming, i finally decided to curtain off a section of our dining room (originally advertised as a bedroom) in order to create a custom storage space. the thing was, i didn’t want it to look like storage. i wanted it to be all tucked away, neat and out of sight, unaware it was even there. our dining room, originally advertised as the second bedroom, was awkwardly shaped and curtaining the room off to form a square made a future layout easier to see. covering up a window was a small price to pay considering the rooms small size and open access to the rest of the house where light openly flows. we now have room for all that crud we don’t necessarily wan’t to see with easy access when its use is needed. honestly without this, i don’t know how we would be living here today.

TOOLS
i have been so inspired by all the small apartment posts i’ve seen around the web lately that i thought it might be fun to start one here of my own. although some may not call just under 800 square feet “itty-bitty”, it has been an adjustment for us especially with only two very small closets only big enough to hang a few things within. and then there is the kitchen … if you are like us and living in a place with a very, very, small kitchen, there is a good chance you will be washing your dishes by hand instead of by dishwasher. for us, this can be a pain especially when your counter space is nonexistent like ours. these are just a few tools we have found helpful for us dishwasher-less folk.
drying tray
tool # 1: a drying tray. catches the water from spilling and making a wet mess on the counter. we got ours here.
ultra
tool # 2: an ultra absorbent drying mat – rests above the drying tray. this tool is new to us but we love it! it helps soak water away and dry dishes quicker. it’s also machine washable! similar one here.
dish rack
tool # 3: a dish rack. great to help organize and let more dishes dry at one time.
scrubbers1
tool # 4: good dish scrubbers. we personally like to have one that can hold soap up top for easy dish-soap dispensing and cleaning and one with a handle that can fit inside hard to reach places like drinking glasses. we also prefer these types of dish scrubbers to actual sponges because they are so much easier to keep clean.
drying rag

tool # 5: an absorbent drying rag for when air drying is just too slow. ours is from here.
